The God Dialogues Book Summary/Review:

The God Dialogues is an intriguing and extensive philosophical debate about the existence of God. Engaging and accessible, it covers all the main arguments for and against God's existence, from traditional philosophical proofs to arguments that involve the latest developments in biology and physics. Three main characters represent the principal views: Theodore Logan, the theist; Eva Lucien, the atheist; and Gene Sesquois, the agnostic. Their debate takes place during a post-college cross-country road trip during which Gene expresses dismay over his future. He wants to do something meaningful with his life but is at a loss as to how to proceed, despite having just earned a degree in engineering. Gene's quandary precipitates a discussion of the meaning of life and its connection to God's existence. This in turn leads to vigorous debates about morality and theism, evidence for and against God's existence, probability and the rationality of belief, and the relationship between faith and reason. The strongest arguments from all three perspectives are fairly represented. An annotated list of suggested readings directs readers to relevant and helpful primary sources. Assuming no background knowledge, The God Dialogues is ideal for courses in the philosophy of religion, an excellent supplement for introduction to philosophy courses, and a compelling introduction for anyone with an interest in the subject.

One in the series New Dialogues in Philosophy, edited by Dale Jacquette, Charles Taliaferro, a leading philosopher of religion, presents several fictional dialogues among characters with contrasting views on the existence of God. The views express the many standard positions: theism, atheism, skepticism, and other nuanced arguments about the nature of God. In a series of five inspired, original debates, Taliaferro taps into several famous exchanges, including those among Antony Flew, Basil Mitchell and R. M. Hare; between Frederick Copleston

In Exodus 32-34, through a series of dialogues, Moses persuades God to spare the Israelites from destruction after they have made and worshipped a golden calf. The significance of this passage was not lost on ancient interpreters. At the heart of their concerns was the relationship between Moses and God, as well as the extent to which the Divine could be swayed by human reason and passion. For some, the idea that God could be moved by human efforts was

By the time of Lucian, popular religion had ceased to hold much influence over the hearts of the cultured classes. Philosophy was the new God, but there were efforts in some circles to divert men's minds from the philosophical sects and restore a sort of unorthodox faith in the old religion. Against this artificial revival of mythological faith, Lucian pitted the influence of his tremendous satirical powers. In the "Dialogues of the Gods," he pulls the curtain aside-exposing the Gods

Robert Pretty's introduction and translation of the Adamantius Dialogue provides access to the last important extant source about ancient Gnosticism(s) left unavailable in a modern European language. Little or no new material has come to light concerning some other groups than those reflected at Nag Hammadi - the Marconites, for example, and the followers of Bardesanes. These last mentioned groupings, together with the later Valentinians, are the very ones involved in the Adamantius Dialogue. The book is written in

This book consists of a series of dialogues on the relationship between belief in God and the world of nature. One participant is a Christian who believes one can base belief in God on reason and science, one is a Christian who thinks looking for such a base is unnecessary and even undesirable, and the third is an atheist. As the argument goes back and forth, it touches on such topics as the origin of the universe, various alleged pieces

The contemporary theologian Hans Küng has asked if the "death of God," proclaimed by Nietzsche as the event of modernity, was inevitable. Did the empowering of new forms of rationality in Western culture beginning around 1500 lead necessarily to the reduction or privatization of faith? In Dialogues between Faith and Reason, John H. Smith traces a major line in the history of theology and the philosophy of religion down the "slippery slope" of secularization—from Luther and Erasmus, through Idealism,

SPARK* is a dialogue about creativity. But this is not about creativity in the external sense of brainstorming or coming up with new ideas. It’s a discussion around the internal experience of creativity and what it means to be a creator. The fulfillment of creative inspiration is more of a reflex, a necessity, in the face of the internal friction and angst that exists within us, pressing us ever deeper into ourselves in our need to explore and expose
