Flare Stars in Star Clusters Associations and the Solar Vicinity Book Summary/Review:

Some 70 papers present the flare star problem from both a physical and evolutionary aspect, and represent an interaction between investigators working on flare stars in clusters and associations, and those working on the UV Ceti stars in solar vicinity. The variety of perspectives reveal a physical similarity among several non-stable phenomena, and suggest that the different manifestations of stellar activity result from the release of some unknown kind of energy in the outer layers of young stars. The papers deal not only with different aspects of flare stars, but also with such related objects as T Tauri stars, fluors, and Herbig-Haro objects. Flare Stars covers the significant progress in photoelectric, photographic, and spectral observations of flare stars. Flare star is a variable star that can undergo unpredictable dramatic increases in brightness for a few minutes believed to be due to extremely intense flares. This book is composed of 16 chapters and begins with an overview of flare stars and the hypothesis of infrared photon transformation. The succeeding chapters deal with the inverse Compton Effect, X-ray radiation and the theory of the transition radiation

This volume is devoted to the dynamics and diagnostics of solar magnetic fields and plasmas in the Sun’s atmosphere. Five broad areas of current research in Solar Physics are presented: (1) New techniques for incorporating radiation transfer effects into three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic models of the solar interior and atmosphere, (2) The connection between observed radiation processes occurring during flares and the underlying flare energy release and transport mechanisms, (3) The global balance of forces and momenta that occur during flares, (4) The data-analysis and

A computer program has been developed which processes and groups individual observations of solar flares which describe the same feature. From each group of observations a consolidated description of the flare 'event' is produced. The report details the methods by which these groups are formed and the subsequent consolidated descriptions achieved. (Author).

The flare data were compiled primarily from the flare lists of the IAU Quarterly Bulletin and a magnetic tape obtained from the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences and Aeronomy (ITSA). This tape was assembled from the CRPL-F Part B series (1955 through 1964) and included sub-flare reports. Altogether, 84,600 reports were compiled. In preparing the revised tape, tests were made for errors that were introduced at various stages in the handling of the data. Some errors were detected by comparing the entries for flare

This is a summary of the ten years (1955-1964) of observations of solar flares reported by 61 observatories. The flare reports have been published predominantly in the IAU Bulletin and CRPL-F Series Part B. This report summarizes the types of information contained in the flare reports, and the frequency of some parts of these reports as functions of many parameters. The results reflect the need for closer cooperation and coordination of participating observatories in recording and reporting solar flare data.

This book provides results of analysis of typical solar events, statistical analysis, the diagnostics of energetic electrons and magnetic field, as well as the global behavior of solar flaring loops such as their contraction and expansion. It pays particular attention to analyzing solar flare loops with microwave, hard X-ray, optical and EUV emissions, as well as the theories of their radiation, and electron acceleration/transport. The results concerning influence of the pitch-angle anisotropy of non-thermal electrons on their microwave and

A magnetograph at the Sacramento Peak Observatory is being used on a daily basis to record the magnetic fields in solar active regions. Contour maps of the line-of-sight component of the field are available to the observers and to the flare prediction groups at NOAA and AWS within an hour after observation. The contour maps reveal many details of both weak and strong magnetic fields that are closely associated with large and small flares. Through the use of several examples,
